Understanding shoulder pain.

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body. That mobility is also what makes it one of the most vulnerable joints. It relies heavily on the surrounding muscles, tendons, and ligaments to stay stable and move correctly. When any part of that system is injured or overloaded, shoulder pain follows.

Shoulder pain can come from many different sources. Rotator cuff tears, shoulder impingement, frozen shoulder, AC joint injuries, labral tears, and shoulder dislocations all present differently and require different treatment approaches. Getting the right diagnosis from the start saves months of ineffective treatment.

At H.O.M.E, House of Movement & Excellence in Saket, South Delhi, we assess every shoulder thoroughly before starting any treatment. The first session is dedicated entirely to understanding what is causing your pain and what the right plan looks like for your situation.

Shoulder pain affects cricketers, wrestlers, boxers, swimmers, and overhead athletes as well as desk workers, drivers, homemakers, and anyone who uses their arm throughout the day. Whether your shoulder was injured in a tackle or has simply been stiff and painful for months, the assessment at H.O.M.E starts with understanding your life and your goals.

Signs your shoulder needs attention.

Pain when lifting the arm

Pain when reaching overhead, putting on a shirt, or lifting objects. This is one of the most common shoulder complaints and can come from several different sources that need to be properly identified.

Night pain and sleep problems

Shoulder pain that wakes you up at night or makes it impossible to lie on the affected side. Night pain is a significant sign that the shoulder needs clinical assessment and should not be left untreated.

Weakness in the arm

Difficulty carrying objects, pushing, pulling, or throwing because the shoulder feels weak. Weakness that has developed gradually or suddenly after an injury both need proper assessment.

Clicking, catching, or locking

A sensation of something catching or clicking inside the shoulder during movement. Sometimes accompanied by a sharp pain at a specific point in the range. This can indicate a labral or rotator cuff problem.

What happens in your assessment at H.O.M.E.

Your story comes first

Your appointed doctor takes time to understand when the pain started, what makes it better or worse, how it is affecting your daily life or sport, and what you want to achieve from treatment.

Full clinical shoulder assessment

Specific tests to identify which structures are involved. We assess movement, strength, stability, and the position and mechanics of the shoulder blade and neck. This gives us a complete picture of what is happening.

Clear diagnosis in plain language

You will understand exactly what is causing your shoulder pain, what your options are, and what a realistic recovery timeline looks like. No jargon. No confusion. A clear plan before you leave.

A plan built around your life

Whether you need to get back to throwing a cricket ball, working at a desk without pain, or simply sleeping through the night again, the rehabilitation plan is built around what matters to you.

The rehabilitation process.

Phase 1

Pain Management & Protection

Reducing pain and inflammation. Protecting the shoulder from positions and movements that aggravate it. Restoring basic comfortable movement. Weeks 1 to 3.

Phase 2

Mobility & Strength Rebuilding

Restoring full range of motion. Progressive strengthening of the rotator cuff and shoulder blade muscles. Building stability and control through movement. Weeks 3 to 8.

Phase 3

Activity-Specific Conditioning

Preparing the shoulder for the specific demands of your activity. Overhead work, throwing mechanics, pushing and pulling loads, or returning to sport. Weeks 6 to 14.

Phase 4

Return to Full Activity

Graduated return to everything you want to do with your shoulder. Clear milestones at each stage. You return when the shoulder is genuinely ready and strong enough to handle full demand.

Common questions about shoulder pain.

I am not an athlete. Can H.O.M.E help me?

Yes. Shoulder pain is one of the most common complaints we treat in non-athletes. Desk workers, drivers, homemakers, and people with no sporting background all develop shoulder problems. Your goals are just as important to us as an athlete’s goals.

Do I need an MRI before my assessment?

No. A clinical assessment can identify most shoulder problems without imaging. If imaging is needed, your doctor will tell you what to get and why. Many patients have had MRIs that did not change the treatment approach because the clinical assessment was thorough enough.

How long does shoulder rehabilitation take?

It depends on the type and severity of the injury. Mild rotator cuff strains can recover in 4 to 8 weeks. Frozen shoulder can take 6 to 12 months. Post-surgical rehabilitation varies by procedure. A clear timeline is given at your first assessment.

My shoulder has been painful for over a year. Is it too late?

It is not too late. Chronic shoulder pain responds well to proper rehabilitation. Long-standing problems require a more thorough assessment and a more carefully structured programme, but they are absolutely treatable.

Can I avoid surgery for my shoulder?

In many cases yes. Rotator cuff tears, shoulder impingement, and even some labral injuries can be successfully managed without surgery with the right rehabilitation programme. A proper assessment tells you whether conservative management is the right path for your specific injury.
