What is a knee injury?

The knee is one of the most complex joints in the body. It carries your full body weight with every step you take. When something goes wrong inside the knee, it affects everything. Walking, climbing stairs, sitting for long periods, playing sport, and even sleeping can become difficult.

Knee injuries range from mild ligament sprains to complete ACL tears. The ACL is a ligament inside the knee that keeps it stable during twisting and turning movements. When it tears, the knee gives way and swells quickly. You may hear a pop at the time of injury.

Not all knee injuries are sports injuries. Knee pain is extremely common in people who sit at a desk for long hours, who are on their feet all day, who have recently increased their physical activity, or who have had previous knee problems that were not properly treated.

At H.O.M.E, House of Movement & Excellence in Saket, South Delhi, we assess every knee individually. We look at what is causing your pain, what is making it worse, and what your life and goals look like. Then we give you a clear picture and a real plan.

Knee injuries affect competitive athletes, recreational players, working professionals, and anyone who wants to move without pain. Whether you are a wrestler from Haryana, a runner training for a marathon, or someone whose knee has been painful for months without any clear cause, your assessment at H.O.M.E starts with understanding your life, not just your injury.

Signs your knee needs attention.

Pain with daily activities

Pain when climbing stairs, getting up from a chair, walking for long periods, or after sitting for extended periods. This type of pain affects quality of life and does not go away on its own without proper treatment.

Swelling after activity

The knee swells up after exercise, sport, or even after a long day on your feet. Swelling is a sign that something inside the knee is being irritated or damaged and needs clinical assessment.

The knee gives way

A feeling that the knee is unstable. It buckles or gives way during walking, running, or direction changes. This is a key sign of ligament involvement and needs to be assessed properly.

Stiffness and limited movement

Difficulty fully straightening or bending the knee. Stiffness that is worse in the morning or after rest. A knee that does not move freely through its full range is telling you something is wrong.

What happens in your assessment at H.O.M.E.

Your story comes first

Your appointed doctor takes time to understand how the problem started, what makes it better and worse, what your daily life looks like, and what you want to get back to. This is the foundation of everything that follows.

Full clinical knee assessment

Specific tests to identify which structures are involved and to what degree. We assess movement, strength, stability, and function. This tells us exactly what is happening inside your knee.

Clear explanation in plain language

You will understand exactly what is wrong, what your options are, and what a realistic recovery looks like. No medical jargon. No vague answers. A clear picture before you leave the session.

A plan built around your life

Your rehabilitation plan is built around your specific situation. Whether you need to get back to competitive sport or simply walk to work without pain, the plan reflects your goals and your timeline.

The rehabilitation process.

Phase 1

Pain Management & Protection

Reducing pain and swelling. Protecting the knee from further damage. Restoring basic movement. Weeks 1 to 3.

Phase 2

Strength Rebuilding

Progressive strengthening of the muscles that support the knee. Restoring full range of motion. Building the foundation for full activity. Weeks 3 to 8.

Phase 3

Activity-Specific Conditioning

Preparing the knee for the specific demands of your activity. Whether that is sport, work, or daily life, the knee learns to handle what you need it to do. Weeks 6 to 16.

Phase 4

Return to Full Activity

Graduated return to everything you want to do. Clear milestones before each progression. You return when your knee is genuinely ready, not just when the pain has gone.

Common questions about knee injuries.

I am not an athlete. Can H.O.M.E help me?

Yes. We treat everyone with knee pain regardless of whether they play sport. Many of our patients are working professionals, people who have had knee problems for years, or individuals who simply want to move without pain. Your goals are just as important to us as an athlete’s goals.

Do I need surgery for an ACL tear?

Not always. Many people return to full activity with rehabilitation alone. The decision depends on the grade of the tear, your activity level, and your knee stability. A proper clinical assessment helps you make the right decision for your situation.

How long does knee rehabilitation take?

It depends on the type and severity of the injury. Mild ligament sprains can recover in 4 to 6 weeks. ACL rehabilitation after surgery typically takes 9 to 12 months for return to sport. A clear timeline is given at your first assessment.

My knee has been painful for months. Is it too late?

It is never too late. Chronic knee pain responds well to proper rehabilitation. The longer the problem has been present does not mean it cannot be fixed. It means the programme needs to account for that history.

Can I continue working or exercising during rehabilitation?

In most cases yes, with modifications. Your doctor will tell you exactly what is safe and what should be avoided during your recovery. Staying active in the right way is usually part of the rehabilitation process, not something to avoid.
